Key Fob Repairs Liverpool
A fob that's stopped responding feels like the whole key's died — usually it's just the small part inside that has, and that's a much cheaper problem.
Batteries, buttons, circuit boards and water damage diagnosed and repaired on site, then re-synced to your vehicle — often a fraction of a dealer's full fob replacement cost.

A Dead Fob Doesn't Always Mean a Dead Key
Most modern keys actually do two separate jobs. One part — the transponder chip inside the key head — talks to the immobiliser and lets the engine start; that's covered on my car key programming page. The other part — the remote circuit board and buttons — handles locking, unlocking and the alarm from a distance. On many vehicles these two systems are independent, which means a fob with dead remote buttons often still lets you start the car perfectly fine with the key physically inserted, even though the remote locking has stopped working entirely.
That's genuinely useful to know before assuming the worst: a fob problem is frequently a battery, a worn button membrane, a hairline crack in the circuit board track, or water ingress — all repairable without touching the transponder chip that actually starts your car. Once repaired, the fob is re-synced to the vehicle's receiver so remote locking, keyless entry and the alarm all respond correctly again.
On integrated smart keys — the flat plastic keys with no separate blade, common on newer vehicles — the two functions can be more tightly bundled together, so I'll always check your specific key type on the phone before promising which parts are independent for your vehicle.

Symptoms I See Every Week
A Straight Answer, Not an Upsell
Repair is almost always cheaper — which is why I check first rather than defaulting to a full fob replacement.
Usually a Fraction of a Dealer Fob
Dealers frequently replace the entire fob for what's often a small, cheaply fixed fault — repair is quicker and considerably less expensive.
The most common fix — diagnosed and replaced on site in minutes.
Worn buttons, membrane replacement, or re-housing into a new shell.
Where the circuit board can't be salvaged, I quote a full replacement fob separately — never assumed.
Exact price confirmed once I've assessed the fob — no call-out fee, no VAT, and the quote is the invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my fob is broken, will my car still start?
Often, yes — on many vehicles the remote buttons and the transponder chip that starts the engine are separate systems. Insert the key physically and try the ignition; if it starts, the fob repair is a convenience fix, not an emergency one. I'll confirm how your specific vehicle is wired when you call.
Can I just replace the battery myself?
On some fobs, yes — but many require the case to be opened carefully to avoid snapping clips, and a small number need re-syncing to the vehicle afterwards. If you're not confident, it's a five-minute job for me and avoids a cracked casing.
Why does my fob work close up but not from a distance?
Usually a weakening battery or a hairline crack in the circuit board's aerial track — both diagnosable and often repairable on site.
What if my fob got wet?
Don't try to power it on repeatedly — let it dry and call me. Water damage is serious but not always fatal to the electronics; I'll assess whether it's salvageable or needs a full replacement.
Does re-syncing a repaired fob need special equipment?
Yes — professional diagnostic equipment connects through the vehicle's OBD port to re-pair the fob to the receiver, the same process used for key programming. As a SERMI-approved locksmith I have the authorised access this requires.
How much does a dealer normally charge for this?
Dealers typically replace the whole fob rather than repair it, which usually costs considerably more and takes longer — repair is often a fraction of that, when the fault allows for it.
