The Physical Half of a Key — Not the Electronic Half
Cutting is purely mechanical: shaping a blade so its profile matches the pins inside your lock or ignition barrel precisely enough to turn. That's either done by copying an existing key exactly, or cut to code — worked out from your vehicle's manufacturer data using the VIN, with no original key needed at all. Where a vehicle's chip data is protected, that lookup goes through the SERMI scheme I'm approved under, rather than a workaround.
What cutting alone does not do is pair a key electronically to your car's immobiliser. On any vehicle with a transponder chip or smart key system, a freshly cut key will turn in the lock and the ignition but won't start the engine until it's also programmed. The two are priced and quoted separately, and I'll always tell you honestly whether your specific job needs one or both before I start.
Plenty of jobs genuinely only need cutting: a glovebox key, a fuel cap key, a secondary key for an older vehicle with no immobiliser, or simply copying a working key you already have. In those cases, cutting is the whole job — no programming, no extra cost.

Only if your vehicle has no immobiliser, or the key's already programmed. On most modern cars, a freshly cut key needs a separate programming step before the engine will start — I'll always tell you if your job needs both.

Professional code-cutting machines work to the exact tolerances manufacturers specify, whether cutting from a code or copying an existing key — precision that hand-filing or budget equipment can't reliably match.
Do you cut keys for older or classic vehicles?
Often, yes — older mechanical keys without transponders are usually simpler to cut than modern chip keys. Call with the make, model and approximate year and I'll confirm.
