Pairing a Key to Your Car's Security System
Most cars built since the late 1990s use an electronic immobiliser — a security system linked to the vehicle's ECU that checks for a matching transponder chip, or the correct rolling code from a remote, before it will let the engine start. A key can be cut perfectly and still leave you stranded if that pairing step is missing, which is the single most common reason a "new key" won't start a car.
Programming is done on site through the vehicle's OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment — Autel, VVDI2, ACDP, Smart Pro, Zedfull, Lonsdor, OSCA and Key Tool Max Pro, matched to whichever system your manufacturer uses. Depending on the vehicle, that might mean adding a new transponder key, re-synchronising a remote's rolling code, resetting the immobiliser after a battery replacement, or pairing a full smart key with keyless entry and push-button start.
This works whether I've cut the key myself, or you've had one cut elsewhere, bought a second-hand key online, or ordered one from a dealer — programming is a separate job from cutting, and I can usually do it independently. As a SERMI-approved locksmith I have authorised access to protected security information for participating vehicle manufacturers, where that data is required for the job.

Six Signs It's a Programming Job
Not sure if programming is what you need? Any of these usually point straight to it — or just call and describe what's happening.
What Programming Costs on Its Own
Prices below are for programming only — if you also need a key cut, that's priced separately and quoted together on the phone.
Pairing a basic chip key, or re-synchronising a remote's rolling code after a battery change.
Adding a second authorised key, or resetting the immobiliser after a 12V battery disconnect.
Keyless-entry and push-button-start systems — the most involved programming jobs on newer vehicles.
Exact price confirmed on the phone once I know your vehicle and key type — no call-out fee, no VAT, and the quote is the invoice.
A Real Programming Job in Liverpool
Ford — Programmed with Dealer-Level Software
A Ford requiring manufacturer-level diagnostic software to pair the new key correctly — completed on site using the appropriate authorised system, tested across ignition, remote and alarm before handover.
VW Polo — Cut and Paired to the Immobiliser
New key cut to code, then programmed to the vehicle's immobiliser on site — both halves of the job done in one visit, tested before I left.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my new key start the car?
Almost always because it hasn't been paired to the immobiliser yet. Cutting and programming are two separate jobs — a correctly cut key still needs to be paired electronically before the car will recognise it.
Do I need to bring my car to a garage?
No — I come to you. Programming is done on site through the vehicle's OBD port using mobile diagnostic equipment, wherever you are across Liverpool and Merseyside.
Can you programme a key I bought online or from a dealer?
In most cases, yes. Keys from another source typically arrive unpaired — I can programme them to your specific vehicle on site, though I'll confirm compatibility with your reg before travelling.
How long does programming take?
Usually 30–60 minutes on site, depending on the vehicle and key type. Smart keys and proximity systems can take a little longer than a basic transponder.
Is aftermarket key programming safe and legal?
Yes, when done properly. As a SERMI-approved locksmith I have authorised access to the protected security data participating manufacturers require for this work — the legitimate route, not a workaround.
Do all my keys need reprogramming after a battery replacement?
Sometimes — certain vehicles reset immobiliser memory when the 12V battery is disconnected, meaning every key needs re-pairing. I can check and fix this in one visit.
