Broken Car Key Repairs Liverpool

A key that's snapped clean off, or one that's jammed solid and won't turn either way — both feel final, and usually aren't.

Snapped blades and stuck keys extracted from ignition barrels and door locks on site, with salvageable electronics re-housed onto a new blade wherever possible — often cheaper and faster than a full replacement.

Two Different Jobs, Depending How It Broke

A broken key is really two different repair jobs wearing the same name. The first is extraction: a blade snapped off inside an ignition barrel or door lock, with the broken piece still lodged in the mechanism. Using specialist extraction tools — fine hooks and broken-key extractors matched to the lock type — I remove the fragment without damaging the pins or cylinder inside, the same care I bring to every non-destructive entry job.

The second is re-housing: once a key head has sheared away from its blade, or the plastic housing around a transponder chip has cracked, the electronics inside — the chip, the remote circuit board — are often still fully working. Where that's the case, I can transfer them onto a new blade rather than cutting and programming an entirely new key from scratch, which saves both time and money.

Sometimes both are needed in the same visit: extract the broken piece from the lock, then re-house its electronics onto a replacement blade. I'll always tell you honestly on site which applies, and what it means for the price, before starting any work. As a SERMI-approved locksmith, any re-housed key is re-paired to your vehicle's immobiliser correctly, not just physically reassembled.

Often Salvageable

  • Transponder chip inside the key head
  • Remote button circuit board
  • Smart key electronics module
  • Original key head shell (if intact)
Common Break Scenarios

Whatever Broke, There's Usually a Fix

Blade snapped in the ignition barrelThe most common break — usually from years of wear or a slightly worn barrel gripping too tightly. The fragment is extracted without damaging the barrel itself.
Blade snapped in the door lockLess urgent than an ignition break, but the same extraction approach applies — the door lock is left undamaged and fully working afterwards.
Key head sheared off the bladeA weak point on many keys after years of use — if the electronics inside the head are intact, they're re-housed onto a new blade rather than replaced entirely.
Key worn thin and won't turnMetal fatigue over years of use can leave a key too thin to grip the pins properly — recut from the original profile before it snaps completely.
Remote button worn through the housingCracked plastic around the buttons is a housing problem, not necessarily an electronics one — often fixed by re-housing rather than full replacement.
Bent or twisted key won't sit in the lockSometimes recoverable by careful straightening, sometimes not — I'll tell you honestly on site rather than force a bent key and risk snapping it there and then.
Repair or Replace?

A Straight Answer, Not an Upsell

Repair is usually cheaper and faster — which is exactly why I always check first rather than defaulting to a full replacement.

Broken Key FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every broken key be repaired?

Most can, but not all — it depends whether the electronics inside survived the break. I'll assess it on site and tell you honestly whether it's a repair or a replacement job before starting anything.

Will extracting a snapped key damage my ignition or lock?

No — extraction uses fine tools matched to the lock type, the same non-destructive care I apply to every job, so the pins and cylinder are left working properly afterwards.

Can the chip from my broken key be reused?

Often, yes — if the transponder chip or remote circuit board survived the break, it can usually be transferred onto a new blade rather than programming an entirely new key.

How long does a repair take?

Extraction alone is often 20–30 minutes; extraction plus re-housing usually 30–60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and how the key broke.

Why do car keys snap or wear out over time?

Metal fatigue from years of turning and everyday knocks is the most common cause — a key that's felt stiff or thin for a while is often close to breaking, and worth having checked before it does.

What if you get there and it turns out to need full replacement?

Then I quote that separately on the spot and explain why repair isn't an option — nothing is assumed or charged without you agreeing to it first.
