More Than Cutting a Key — Pairing It to Your Car
A replacement car key is really two jobs in one. The first is physical: cutting a new blade — standard, laser-cut or Tibbe-style depending on your vehicle — to the exact profile the manufacturer assigned to your car, worked out from the vehicle's VIN or an existing key. That part is covered in more detail on my car key cutting page.
The second job is electronic, and it's the part that catches people out. Most cars built since the late 1990s use an electronic immobiliser — a security system that checks for a matching transponder chip inside the key head before it will allow the engine to start. A perfectly cut key without programming will open your doors and turn in the ignition, but the car simply won't start. I carry the diagnostic equipment to do both halves at your location, connecting through the vehicle's OBD port to pair the new key — whether that's a basic transponder key, a remote flip key, or a full smart key with keyless entry and push-button start.
As a SERMI-approved locksmith I have authorised access to protected security information for participating vehicle manufacturers, where that data is required for the job — the approved route into modern key and immobiliser work.

Every Key Gone? Still Not a Problem
Losing your only key — or having it stolen — feels like the worst-case scenario, but it's a job I do every week. Working from the vehicle's VIN and proof of ownership, I generate the key data from the manufacturer's records, cut the new key to code, and program it to the immobiliser as if it were the original.
Crucially, if your key was stolen, I delete the old key from the immobiliser's memory at the same time — so the missing key can never start your car again. That's a genuine security step, not an optional extra, and it's one reason a proper replacement beats a cheap clone. You'll need your V5C or other proof of ownership for this — see GOV.UK's V5C guidance if you're not sure where yours is.
What a Replacement Key Actually Costs
The exact price depends on your vehicle and key type — a basic transponder key is a very different job from a proximity smart key. I confirm the precise figure on the phone before I travel, and it doesn't change on the driveway.
Basic blade and chip keys for most popular models — cut, programmed and tested on site.
Keys with integrated remote central locking — cut, programmed, and the remote synced to the vehicle.
Keyless-entry and push-button-start systems on newer vehicles — the most involved jobs — and typically still saving you more than half of the dealer price.
Compare that with a main dealer, where customers typically save more than half with ADC — and avoid days of waiting and a tow to the dealership if you can't drive there. Every ADC price includes travel, cutting, programming and testing: no call-out fee, no VAT, and the quote is the invoice.
Replacement Keys for Popular Makes
I regularly replace and program keys for these manufacturers across Liverpool — key availability and programming methods vary by model, so call with your registration and I'll confirm compatibility and the exact price before travelling. See the full makes list for details on every brand.

VW Polo — Every Key Gone
Full all-keys-lost job: key data generated from the VIN, a new key cut to code and programmed to the immobiliser, with the missing key deleted from the vehicle's memory so it could no longer start the engine.
VW — Rare Key Sourced from Germany
Some keys can't be cut locally — this VW needed a genuine key ordered through the manufacturer's dealer network in Germany, which I then programmed to the vehicle on arrival. The honest route when a vehicle needs it, and I'll always tell you upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a car key replacement take?
Most replacements are done within 30–60 minutes on site once I arrive — cutting, programming and testing included. The exception is rare keys that have to be ordered through the dealer network first, which I'll identify on the phone before you commit.
Can you replace my key if I've lost the only one?
Yes — all-keys-lost is routine work. I generate the key data from your vehicle's VIN, cut a new key to code and program it to the immobiliser. You'll need proof of ownership, such as your V5C registration document.
Do you replace keyless and push-button-start keys?
Yes — smart keys and proximity fobs for keyless-entry systems are covered, including deleting a lost smart key from the vehicle so it can't be used. These are the more involved (and more expensive) jobs, but still typically well under dealer prices.
Will my old key stop working after a replacement?
Only if you want it to. Adding a spare leaves existing keys working; after a theft or all-keys-lost job I delete the missing keys from the immobiliser memory so they can never start the car.
Why do you ask for proof of ownership?
Because cutting and programming a key to a car you don't own shouldn't be possible — asking for the V5C or equivalent protects you as the owner. Any locksmith who doesn't ask should worry you.
Is a replacement key guaranteed?
Every key is tested on site across ignition, central locking, remote and alarm functions before I leave — ask me about the warranty applicable to your specific key type when you call.
